Target Audience

Physicians, Physician assistanta/Physician associates, Nurse Practitioners, and other healthcare providers 

Learning Objectives

  • Discuss the incidence of vertebral fractures (VF) among older adults. 

  • Explain the necessity of diagnostic imaging for accurate VF identification.​

  • Describe the importance of accurate diagnosis and treatment to improve patient outcomes and support cost-efficient care.

  • Diagnose and initiate first-line osteoporosis treatment for those with VF and high risk of future fractures.
  • Identify patients at risk for undiagnosed COPD, including those with incidental emphysema

  • Apply post-bronchodilator spirometry criteria (FEV1/FVC < 0.7) to confirm diagnosis of COPD

  • Use symptom assessment tools and exacerbation history to classify newly diagnosed patients into GOLD A, B or E stages

  • Initiate evidence-based inhaler therapy based on GOLD stage 

  • Adjust treatment over time based on ongoing symptom and exacerbation burden
